As the season turns cold, the garden, too, begins to rest. What remains as the year draws to a close is modest yet meaningful—a handful of flowers for a final bouquet, a few pumpkins, and some lingering greens. Twelve months ago the work began, and suddenly, it seems, it is finished. But is the work ever truly done? The planning and preparing, the tilling, sowing, watering, gathering, and sharing of abundance with friends and family—these rhythms continue, even as the beds grow quiet.
In high summer, the garden offered a place to linger in the evening, cooling down as the plants quenched their thirst after a long day in the sun. In autumn, it became a gathering place, where friends shared meals made with love, using vegetables pulled straight from the soil. And now, as we close the season, we come together once more—to enjoy what remains, and to take in the surrounding beauty of Sauvie Island.
Thank you to Parker Fitzgerald for capturing the Gentleman Gardener and his friends, as seen in Popeye Magazine.
